Treatments

The Friedenwald Eye Institute offers innovative, advanced treatment options to those suffering from a range of eye disorders.

Options include:

Minimally Invasive Surgery

Cataract surgery is performed using minimally invasive surgical techniques for a faster recovery. An incision about 3mm (less than 1/8th of an inch) is created, after which the phacoemulsification process starts, during which the cataract is fragmented into microscopic particles and removed through the tiny incision. The surgical time for cataract surgery is approximately 15 minutes. Patients are able to leave shortly after the surgery and can resume most activities the next day.

Injections

Wet macular degeneration, a type of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) that led to blindness 10 years ago, is now treated using medications in the form of injections that offer patients a new quality of life.

Glaucoma Treatment

We offer laser procedures, stand-alone surgical procedures, or combined with cataract surgery to reduce or eliminate the need for glaucoma eye medications.

Laser

UMMC Midtown Campus has facilities for laser treatment of glaucoma, “after cataracts,” as well as diabetic retinopathy. The current standard therapy for diabetic eye disease is laser treatment, which is now often combined with injections of mediation similar to those used to treat patients with wet macular degeneration.
