Los senos están rodeados de hueso y cartílago y recubiertos por una membrana mucosa. La sinusitis se presenta cuando las membranas se inflaman y causan dolor, lo cual puede ser resultado de un bloqueo de la entrada del seno.

Con frecuencia, la sinusitis crónica es causada por inflamación y bloqueo debido a una obstrucción física, como desviación del tabique, malformación ósea o de la estructura del cartílago, como por ejemplo las conchas nasales, o bloqueos por quistes o pólipos nasales.
