En todos los casos de obstrucción intestinal se debe examinar con cuidado el intestino involucrado. Si cualquier parte del intestino parece enfermo por falta de flujo sanguíneo durante el período de obstrucción, se debe extirpar y conectar de nuevo las extremidades que están sanas.

La recuperación de un paciente depende de la causa de la obstrucción intestinal y el tiempo transcurrido antes de eliminar la obstrucción. Generalmente, el resultado es positivo si la obstrucción se trata antes de presentarse daño (isquemia) o muerte (necrosis) del intestino.
